Cycling Tsunami

Some have critiqued the Mayor for her reference to budget constraints when it comes to funding cycling safety improvements.

I’ve never looked at the City’s budget, but I know one thing for sure — there’s always money for politically popular issues. Examples abound.

Many have pointed to the new City Hall rising from its perch on Avocado, overlooking the ocean. I imagine it’s being financed with long term bonds, so there’s only a sliver of expense in any single year’s budget.

It’s easy to take potshots at such a Taj Mahal project, but there’s one argument in favor I keep harkening back to: in the case of a major earthquake and the resulting tsunami, if City Hall had stayed on the peninsula there would be no City Hall. That would greatly complicate recovery efforts, to say the least, which makes me think… In such an emergency our city leaders won’t be conducting outreach programs; there won’t be time to ask how those affected feel about some do or die response. As I envision such a futuristic disaster scenario I trust that we have the leadership to respond adequately.

But this recent series of cycling tragedies, apparently it hasn’t triggered the Tsunami Effect with our city leaders. It should. Now’s the time to paint the Sharrows on Coast Hwy through CdM. The time for coddling the doubters and whiners within the motoring public is over. Let’s act as if we’re facing a cycling tsunami, because some would say we already are.
