Life on State Street

A few days ago I was interviewed on Max Mautner’s new channel, How to Meet Your Neighbor.

Although we chatted for over an hour, I must have felt I left something out, because here I am with a few more details about life on State Street after the City closed it to cars.

Depending on who you ask, you’ll get different opinions, but the numbers show: Occupancy is up and Vacancies are down. State Street is thriving, but it’s not without its flaws, mostly that being teenagers on powerful ebikes. We won’t fix that overnight, but just yesterday the City Council took steps to address the challenge. But let’s stay with glass half full: we need more housing downtown along State Street and it’s coming. UCSB acquired a 75-unit apartment building right off State Street; given some time, this move alone will have a big impact…
